Italy and Chianti, the most awarded by Wine Spectator, present their excellences:
Chianti la Pieve and Chianti Fortebraccio riserva
Regardless of the classification system used, the excellence for a wine is always between 90 and 95 points, denoting a very high quality product. Given that most of the wines (or at least most of the wines reviewed) get between 80 and 90 points, the watershed to recognize the excellence of a wine (and consequently its very high quality) is the threshold of 90 points.
The Chianti wines labelled Chianti La Pieve and Chianti Fortebraccio Riserva, with an average score of 91 points for the Chianti La Pieve and of 93 points for the Chianti Fortebraccio Riserva, are therefore classified as real excellences among the best Italian wines. The scores of 91 and 93 points are derived from the average of the various scores assigned to these two superior high quality wines over the years by nume-rous experts (sommeliers, critics, influencers, etc.) and specialized sector magazines.
The American Wine Spectator magazine represents the real bible for the entire wine sector and it is a reference point since 1988. Every year in November Wine Spectator unveils the complete list of the 100 best wines in the world for the year. The bottles are selected from a shortlist of over fifteen thousand candidates, reviewed in the previous 12 months by Wine Spectator’s experts through blind tastings. Since its first release in 1988, the Wine Spectator Top 100 has been celebrating the best wines and wineries in the world and, with them, the best wine-growing regions and vintages: being added to this list is a prestigious honor for wines and producers from all over the world.
Each year, the judges assess each wine on the basis of four criteria: quality, value, availability and excitement. Quality is observed through blind tastings, i.e. without information about the label or the origins, and then to the wine is given a numerical score. The value is reflected in the price of the bottle, while the availability is based on the number of cases produced or imported into the United States. The last criterion for Wine Spectator is the excitement, i.e. the captivating notes behind the wine and its history.
In the Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2018 the “podium” of the best three wines in the world was:
1) Sassicaia Tenuta San Guido 2015 (Tuscany – Italy)
2) St.-Emilion Château Canon-La Gaffelière 2015 (Bordeaux – France)
3) Chianti Classico Castello di Volpaia Riserva 2015 (Tuscany – Italy)
In the Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2019, just released, the “podium” of the best three wines in the world is instead:
1) St.-Julien Château Léoville Barton 2016 (Bordeaux – France)
2) Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder Mayacamas 2015 (Napa Valley – California, USA)
3) Chianti Classico San Giusto a Rentennano 2016 (Tuscany – Italy)
So, Italy is continuing to stands out alongside France as one of the most represented regions among the best wines in the world. Tuscany and Chianti are in pole position as the most represented, holding the Italian flag in the Wine Spectator Top 100 2018 with Sassicaia Tenuta San Guido 2015 and Chianti Classico Castello di Volpaia Riserva 2015, respectively in first and third place, as well as also in the Wine Spectator Top 100 2019 with Chianti Classico San Giusto a Rentennano 2016, in third place.
